The Tulips Got Hitched!!!

Hello, all!   Sorry it's been a while -- things got unbearably busy in the last weeks before our wedding.   But the Tulips are now Mr. and Mrs!

One

We had a number of wedding-related disasters, including car accidents, nearly-forgotten rings, last-minute venue hijincks, and NO MUSIC for the reception.  But it was still an incredibly joyous day.  I spent all day with an expression like this:

Expect many more details as we have photos to illustrate everything!

The Invites Unveiled

Despite my earlier post, our Gocco invites did finally come together in a presentable way.  And here they are!

Invite_open

Though there appear to be 2 inserts in the photo, there are actually 3 -- a direction card (which we did on the inkjet, since it's just small black type), RSVP card with envelope, and small card (in blue-and-red) that gives the reception time and location, our wedding website address, and our name and address for after the wedding.

Inserts

Originally, I purchased Snow & Graham cherry blossom paper to use as decoration for the front.  But we decided it looked too busy, so instead we did something simple on the Gocco.  (There was only 1/2 of a screen left, after inking our smallest insert.  But it was enough!)  In retrospect, I wish I had bordered the white square, but the front bit was all rather last-minute and "let's just get these darn things done before the weekend is over"....

We were happiest with the RSVP cards.  Which is nice, because it turns out you see a lot of them when they start coming back to you!!  I also used my beloved cherry blossom paper to line the envelopes, so I get to see it every time I open one.

Rsvp

The Double Happiness symbol was motivated by our engagement, which took place on August 8 -- 8/8 is a representation for "Double Happiness" in Chinese numerology.  We had a devil of a time trying to word the RSVPs because all the examples seemed too formal.  But I love what we (by which I mean Mr. T) came up with.  The choices are all very clear, it avoids that "M__________" line that makes me irrationally angry, and it both clarifies that children are welcome and helps us know how many little ones to plan for.

Here's the cost breakdown of the materials.  (Not including the purchase of the Gocco itself, since it's something I'd wanted forever and will use for many other projects.):

75 blue pocketfolds (Cards & Pockets)    $70

50 sheets red cardstock (Paper Presentation)    $15.10

100 sheets white laser card (Paper Presentation)    $21

100 6" square red envelopes (Paper Presentation)    $31.10

100 4" square red envelopes (Paper Presentation)    $21.10

2 sheets cherry blossom paper (Paper Studio)    $6.00

Gocco ink, bulbs, and screens (Northwood Studios)   $35

Glue dots, glue lines, glue stick    $5.00

Total  ---------------------------- $204.30

Per Invitation ------------------- almost exactly $3

(After seeing that total, they sounded more expensive than I'd realized.  I had a moment of panic that I could have just purchased something -- and probably something more professional -- for the same price!  Luckily, a bit of searching on Etsy suggested that isn't true....)

Too Late for Us....

But for anyone else who might be using a lantern theme or hanging a lot of lanterns at the wedding site, how great is this new fabric from Ikea?  It will be out in April.

The only use I can think of is stunning table runners, but I'm sure the more creative among you can think of more....  How would you use this, or how are you incorporating fabrics into your wedding?

My Bridezilla Moment

Perhaps it's the lesson of many long years of illness, but for the most part I've been easy-going about this wedding thing.  As with most of my life, I do what I can given the time and energy available.  And if something becomes impossible, I learn to do without.

So it was a bit of a surprise this week when I had my first genuine Bridezilla moment!

Bridezilla

My mother called, sounding wretchedly ill, to let me know she had pneumonia.  (In fact, she wound up in the hospital a day later....)  And what was the first thought through my brain?  Not, "oh, you poor dear, I don't want you to suffer."  Not "what, oh what, can I do to help?"  No, the first thought through my head was:  "WELL, YOU'D BETTER GET BETTER IN TIME FOR MY WEDDING, LADY!!!"

Luckily, I did NOT share that sentiment out loud!  (And Mom should be out of the hospital by the weekend; hopefully completely healed in time for her trip....)

What Bridezilla moments have surprised you in your wedding planning process?

Weather Obsessed

With the wedding only a few weeks away, and March weather doing its usual crazy March weather thing, I've become slightly obsessed with the question of what the weather will be like on our wedding day.

The other night, I combed the Internet for month-long weather forecasts, and there were a few.  But they were hard to read and didn't seem to agree with one another.

And then?  I found my Holy Grail.  Turns out my usual go-to weather website, Weather Underground, has something called a "Trip Planner" that analyzes 30 years of statistical data for any location and date.  Yes, it's intended for travel, and I've definitely run our honeymoon locations to check the typical temperatures.  But what a great idea for weddings too.

Or, maybe not so great.  Apparently, we have a 17% chance that the weather will dip below freezing (though the average high is 55 degrees) and a 31% chance of rain.  So now I'm obsessing about THOSE numbers!

Anyone else keeping your fingers crossed in a big way??!

Is it Weird

... to be a little in love with an airline?

What if it's one you've never even flown?!?

Virgin_cabin

Virgin America came to the DC area about 6 months ago, offering flights to California and other parts West.  I'm a sucker for anything "budget with style", and Virgin America has that in spades.  Extra legroom, advanced in-flight entertainment, and plug-ins at each seat for your electronics make me one happy girl.  (Even better, word is they have in-flight Wi-Fi in the works.)  And even their full fares run around $150 each-way between DC and SFO/LAX, with frequent sales.

So why is this relevant?  Every time Virgin America has a sale, I start talking about how Mr. T and I should take a trip to California.  We were struggling mightily with a honeymoon destination -- too broke post-wedding to go anywhere too exotic, a bit worried about Spring Breakers in the Caribbean, and the places we thought of in the US sounded too pedestrian for a honeymoon....  And then Virgin America had a sale.  And Mr. T had the inspired idea that we should fly out to San Francisco, explore the coast for several days, and fly home from Los Angeles.

And voila!  A honeymoon is born!

I couldn't think of anywhere better than The Hive as a source of fabulous California knowledge....  What are your favorite spots / eateries / activities in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and along the Coast??
